Deferral Request

Deferral rules

  • You will only be able to defer within one year of your original program start date on your I-20 or DS-2019.
  • You may only defer once. After that, you will be required to reapply for the program.
  • We will not issue new acceptance letters or scholarship letters with your deferred I-20.
  • If your SEVIS record is already deactivated, you will need to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee again.
  • You must complete the Deferral Request Form before February 2nd, 2024. Any requests after the deadline will not be accepted.
  • You are able to make a visa interview appointment with your current I-20/DS-2019. You only need an updated document for the interview.

Important reminders
  • If you are enrolled in classes, please be sure to email your academic advisor to drop your classes. If you do not do so, you will be charged for the classes and you will have to pay.
  • If you have been denied a student visa, please know that your chances of getting the visa on a subsequent attempt are greatly reduced. It is unlikely (though not impossible) for a student to obtain a visa after the first attempt. If this applies to you, you might want to consider whether risking your time and money on another attempt is worth it to you.
