2023 Tax Return Information

TAX RETURN INFORMATION
If you were present in the U.S. in the year of 2023, you must submit at least one document for tax return purposes, regardless of whether you had income or not. What this means is that even if you did not have a job in the year of 2023, you must submit something to the U.S. government.

If you did not have income in the year of 2023

If you did not have any income, you must submit the Form 8843. Here's how to do it.
  1. Obtain Form 8843 from the IRS website
  2. Fill out the form on your computer or using a pen. See notes below for specific section informaiton.
  3. Make a copy of the completed form and save it for your records
  4. Mail the form to the following address by April 15, 2024.
    1. We recommend you add tracking and receipt confirmation when you mail. This is because the mailing confirmation will become your only form of proof that you have mailed Form 8843. IRS will not send you any confirmation of receipt, so you will never know if they have received your form unless you choose to add tracking when you mail.

If you had income in the year of 2023

If you did have income and must file tax return, you have to go through a specific process for non-citizens--you cannot use commercial tax return services such as Turbotax as they're for the U.S. citizens. By using the wrong kind of service, you could receive the incorrect amount of money (typically more than you're supposed to).

This year, we're partnering with Sprintax. Sprintax is the only company who provides non-residence tax filing assistance.

The OIE is going to host the Tax Return Workshop on the following days and times. if you pre-register your attandance, you will receive a code to file both Federal and State taxes through Sprintax for FREE. The registration link will close on February 15, 2024. If you'd like to receive a free code for Sprintax, please pre-register and attend the workshop.

Tax Return Workshop
Monday, February 26 at 6:00pm

See How to download W-2 2023 for W-2 information.

To pre-register your attendance, fill out this form by February 15, 2024.

WHY SHOULD YOU FILE A TAX RETURN?
  • The most important reason to file a return is that it is a legal requirement of the United States. Failing to file may impact the status of your current visa and make future US visa applications difficult.
  • Avoid penalties – If you miss the April 15th deadline you may face late filing penalties. Filing prior to this date prevents this, so the earlier you file, the better.
  • You may be owed a tax refund – most international students filing a tax return are due a tax refund for overpaid tax. The average refund is $800 - $1000. It’s worth checking if you are due a refund.
